Mayday! Mayday!
OK, that was a weak joke but it is the first day of May and our first meeting since the Easter double header. Today’s meeting features four of the formulas that appeared back then, namely the PRI Bangers, the Ministox, the Stock Rods and the Lightning Rods so today has contact and speed in almost equal measure.
The Lightning Rods and the Stock Rods seem to be improving on previous years and though they aren’t supposed to be contact formulas, both are prone to all sorts of issues. Maybe an oil leak causes a skid, especially on the corners, or maybe the rain causes somebody with less experience or talent for handling a car in the rain to lose control. The only difference is the size and power of the car. The Lightning Rod was based around the 2 litre Sierra though the type of car used isn’t as tightly controlled as it once was while the Stock Rod is based around the smaller hatchback.
Both formulas gave us some great action over Easter.
I can’t leave the whole final of the last Ministox meeting alone without mentioning the fantastic finish by David Shearing who emerged from a four way battle on turn three to win inside the last quarter. It really goes to show that even with the reduced number of drivers following a massive number of retiring regulars at the end of last season, we still get competitive racing in this junior formula. It bodes well, not just for the season but also for the future of racing in general.
The PRI Bangers are also pretty good again this year with drivers of all kinds willing to give it a go. While some drivers end up being thumped repeatedly – I noticed Jodie Cheeseman getting quite a bit of attention throughout her appearance in the Easter Sunday meeting for example – others do pretty well for themselves such as day licence driver Matt Lewis who took the final trophy. You never know who will turn up for one of these meetings and you never really know who will have a go at whom. See who you think might be up for a trophy or two today!
Our next meeting reverts to a Sunday when the Ministox and Stock Rods return for another go along with the 2l Stock Cars and the next round of the Micro Banger World Series. If you were there for round 2, you will know that this is a meeting that you shouldn’t miss! It all gets going at 1pm on May 14.
