We reach the final qualifying round of the Micro Bangers World Series today with a number of drivers now in a position to clean up overall. In addition both of our noncontact Rod formulas battle it out today and the mighty Ministox also make a return.
It has certainly been an interesting series to date with the Micro Bangers, a formula that we first came to terms with back when the Juniors raced them a few years back.
It should be noted that at least one of those previously Junior drivers has been making themselves known in this series amongst the various more seasoned competitors. The cars themselves, mostly Ka (I really think Ford should have considered not using that name given the fact that pronunciations vary from “Ford Car” to “Ford Kayay” and all points between!) and Nissan Micra (probably the dominant type right now) can really pack a punch despite their diminutive size.
The Stock Rods are fresh off their National Championship and I do need to congratulate everyone that took part in what was a fantastic meeting, one that really showed how well the Stock Rods can race despite the weather which claimed more than one car in the brutal heat. One big problem in this formula is that it is non-contact so the temptation to stick the bumper in is always there but always forbidden, something that a few drivers forgot as the heat grew and the competition became fiercer. Today is nothing like as important as far as titles are concerned by we still have the overall drivers’ championship to consider and every point counts towards the end-of-season award.
We also have the Lightning Rods back. That’s always welcome as far as I am concerned given that they combine the best of a number of formulas and provide a bigger challenge to some drivers given the amount of car that has to be flung around the corners and around competitors. To that end I have always wondered why some circuits and promotions have gone off them so much as with a good field of cars and a good selection of talent, this can be as spectacular as any national formula of the type.
There was plenty to talk about in the Ministox last meeting with drivers such as Aaron Totham finally grabbing some trophy goodness after coming close on so many occasions over the weeks. There were some finishes that put the seniors to shame!
Things get heavier in our next meeting when the PRI Bangers turn up for the annual Caravan Race, something that is normally quite a spectacle of preparation and certainly a spectacle in destruction. The Lightning Rods, Stock Rods and the 2l Stock Cars will all be doing their second Supreme qualifiers so there should be plenty to see in our next, starting at 1pm on Sunday, July 16. Miss it, miss out!
