Today we have something of a treat as besides the Ministox and the Lightning Rods, we welcome back the Shootout for Unlimited and 2l Bangers.
It has been a very long time since we last met up for a Shootout and back then it was all about the Unlimited. Back in those days it was all about Mk.1 and 2 Granadas, Jaguars and the occasional Rover though it wasn’t unusual to see the odd weird item doing the rounds. Though this meeting isn’t so different now from the Firecracker as far as the rules on cars is concerned, it isn’t unusual to see somebody attempt to try their hand at unlimited racing in whatever they can find. The big difference this year will be that we shall be also having action from 2l Bangers, the first outing of the season from the Nationals in full sized cars – they have been spending the season so far trying for the Micro Banger World Series. This will be, as far as I can find in my notes from back then, our ninth version of this meeting, and things have changed a lot in the seven years since then. Sad to say that the activities of teams got a little too bloodthirsty back then and while that has led to the increase in what eventually became the PRI Bangers, the effect did cause problems in many ways at the time. Thankfully the excesses of those days seem to have passed by to a great extent so when you see big crashes in meetings these days, it’s normally just a bit of fun and competition.
The Lightning Rods were out last weekend so I can’t really comment on that meeting but I can certainly say that it is a formula that has come back from the brink with new drivers bolstering the old favourites and action has once again graced our circuit in a formula that while it isn’t a contact formula, it certainly provides our drivers with a problem in getting around without stuffing themselves and each other. With cars as big as these, that is no mean feat!
We welcome the Ministox back after a little hiatus since the middle of May when Autospeed visitor Gemma Robbins drove to an easy victory ahead of Abbie McGuiness in yet another meeting that saw plenty of competitive driving from the Juniors. The season had already started off well with a good number of drivers vying for success while the arrival of visitors from as far afield as Incarace and Autospeed have really put some spice into this formula.
And so we head toward the middle of the season, our next date being the annual Chick Woodroffe Memorial. This year we remember the founder of this circuit with a 4 man Banger Team tournament, 2l Stock Cars, Ministox and the National Championship for the Stock Rods. It all starts at 1pm!
