It’s October again which means that we will be remembering our past glories as the season runs out.
In two weeks time we remember one of the Crayford greats, Ronnie Martin, but this meeting is all about Terry Skeef.
So why orange? People who remember back when Terry was with us could probably give you chapter and verse on this but simply put, Terry was a regular for a PRI banger team known as the Orange Squash. In fact orange was a colour that wasn’t restricted to his bangers as he raced for some time in the National Superstox back when it was a regular formula here and also in the Group A Hot Rods in the years before his illness removed him from racing, though he did continue to watch right up until he passed away. The event we now know as the Terry Skeef Memorial was hurriedly changed from a testimonial that first year where it was arranged for the Non-Ford Bangers and Group A Hot Rods on this very day in 2000, Rob Chiddle and Robbie Wolf taking the two finals along with somebody called Henry Ashworth in the staff race.
Also running today are the Lightning Rods and Stock Rods, both competing for the Supreme Championship title for their respective formula. The Stock Rods tend also to remember Terry with an orange ribbon given that this formula is the successor to the Group A formula though few drivers now go back as far as the days when Terry was still racing. The line up for the Stock Rods is pretty impressive and could see a very tight start with Michael Seex, a driver with past banger experience on this circuit, lining up on pole inside Dave Crouch, a winner of more than one title who will be defending the Supreme title this year. And given his current position in the drivers’ points, that won’t do his chances there any harm either! Having said that, with the Shacklefords and Danny Wade immediately behind, this could be quite a show!
As for the Lightning Rods, we have Dan Guidotti, a former pickup driver who almost threw Lightning Rod racing aside not so long ago, starting inside Anthony Lawrence, a former Ministox graduate that has gone on to great success in the Lightning Rod formula over the years since then. Again the drivers immediately behind this front row could really stir things up, Lee Page and the Reeve family having mixed fortunes this year but with Connor Reeve splitting the two front row drivers in the current points, there is plenty at stake beyond the Supreme title itself.
As a bonus feature today, we also welcome back the 2l Stock Cars for an extra meeting after their Essex Championship run last.
So as I mentioned earlier, our next meeting on Sunday October 22 is another banger Memorial, this time for Ronnie Martin. If you missed the meetings of the last two years, it’s a meeting that features drivers of years gone by and has been a howling success since we first started the meeting. We also have the 2l Stock Cars back again, this time for their own Supreme final and the last appearance of the year for the Ministox. It starts at 1pm that day so don’t you dare miss it!
Also don’t forget that the meeting after that is the big one! The unlimited banger open meeting is back featuring Reliant Robins (see? I got it the right way around!), more 2l Stock Cars, a terrific firework display and, of course, BIG bangers! It’s Firecracker XXVI and you can prebook today at a discount!
