It’s that time of the year when those of us that have the inclination hook a car up to a caravan and take to the tarmac. The sun is up, the sky is blue, there’s not a cloud to spoil the view but there’s some wally blocking the road in front with a caravan and you can’t get to where you want to go in a hurry. Your wish is to give that road blocking annoyance a good pounding but you know that would only mean trouble. Well those kind banger folk are quite willing to do it for you, metaphorically speaking, by taking a bunch of otherwise used caravans, chaining them to the back of their cars and smashing them to pieces!
However that’s the finale of our programme today as we also have a full day of Supreme Championship Qualifiers for the Lightning Rods, Stock Rods and 2l Stock Cars as well as a bit of more normal banger racing for the PRI formula, if you can really call it normal!
Actually the Stock Rods have been quite busy here since the middle of June when Matt Rowling stormed through to take the National Championship title in a pretty eventful and well attended meeting. He should be here with all the other regulars as they fight for points towards this years’ Supreme Championship, the grid gathering here on Skeefy Memorial day, October 8. More about that meeting to follow in the weeks to come but as far as the points are concerned right now with one round gone, an unexpected line up sees Michael Seex, previously seen many years ago here in a banger or two, leads Danny Wade with David Crouch representing the regulars in third spot.
David had a great outing at our last meeting and the points are close enough that we could see plenty of changes before the day is over!
The Lightning Rods are, if anything, even tighter at the top with Dan Guidotti only one point clear of Danny Londors at the top of the Supreme points, both drivers running very competitive races of late including their last appearance which saw Guidotti pull in a heat win amongst other finishes.
Ron Merritt and Paul Strawson aren’t out of it either with only six points less, both capable of good finishes when racing and with this total will guarantee themselves reasonable positions on the start grid, also gathering here on October 8.
The question has to be asked. Can anybody stop that there Bill King? His new car has been unstoppable in all his recent appearances in the 2l Stock Cars and with seven points clear lead in the Supreme points, it looks like he could conceivably be in pole position come October 22 when this formula lines up for its own Supreme final. While Nick Glover and George Boult Jnr are tied behind in second spot, it remains to be seen if the former Banger expert can be beaten or at least stopped!
Talking of stopping, that’s what the PRI Banger folk do. Well that is unless you mean the likes of drivers’ championship leader Tom Greenstreet or some of the folk chasing him at present, but some great crashes have come of this formula, whether you go back to the end of May for the last straight racing or the Chick Woodroffe Memorial meeting for the four man team event.
Our next meeting is something a little different as we host the National Bangers. No, not the Micro Bangers; this time it’s the full size ones competing in the wild card event for the World Banger Championship. We also have the Essex Championship for the Stock Rods and more from the 2l Stock Cars and the return of the Ministox. That’s all at 1pm on Sunday, July 30. See ya!
