It’s the first day of our late August double header, today featuring the last qualifying rounds for the Lightning Rods and the Stock Rods in their pursuit of the Supreme Championship, backed up by the popular PRI Bangers.
It’s all about points today but you will have to forgive me briefly for congratulating Dan Guidotti for winning the Lightning Rods Essex Championship at our last meeting here a couple of weeks ago. Today’s meeting has more to do with how to get enough points to grab a good start in the Supreme Championship final, which takes place here in October. Lee Page has the pole position at the moment, holding Dan by a single point and only nine points ahead of one of the championship favourites Anthony Lawrence.
Meanwhile the same sort of battle awaits the Stock Rods where Michael Seex is at the front of the pack at present with only seven points to spare ahead of Danny Wade and Dave Crouch who share the second spot. Dave might have a comfortable lead in the overall driver’s championship points right now but he faces quite a battle to try to grab the pole position, what with the likes of the two Shacklefords and… Jon Turvey?!? Yes, believe it or not, Jon Turvey is having quite a year of it, amassing enough points in this competition to grab fifth spot to date! A big improvement there though a lot has changed in recent months to the performance of quite a few others including a late surge by Luke Oliver who dominated the last appearance for this formula here back at the end of July. You just never know how this formula will perform!
Our last sight of the PRI Bangers was back in July when they had caravans tied to their backs and I can honestly say that it was quite a meeting! So what if some drivers showboated by driving through the wrecks of the various caravans? It was all good fun to watch and, judging by the amount of grins on the faces of the drivers I saw, fun to take part in too! It isn’t as if these drivers don’t have their own points scrap going on either – Tom Greenstreet has Billy Standing only one point behind him in the driver’s championship so things could get ugly there, not to mention the three way battle for third spot which Charlie Barwell currently holds by four points. The thing is, however, that you never quite know how things are likely to go in a PRI Banger meeting until you know who is racing, day licences and all. And isn’t that all the better for it!
And it doesn’t end there, folk! Tomorrow, starting at 1pm, the Ninja Karts return for the Southern Championship alongside the Ministox and the 2l Stock Cars and, dare I forget, the annual Rawlins Transport Unlimited Big Van Banger Championship! From the smallest to the biggest, we have it all!
