The oldest Banger World series, the PRI/ORC World Championship, enters its 47th running this coming September and plenty of drivers would like to see a gold roof on their cars. Some drivers do it the orthodox way by qualifying as a dominant driver at their respective promotion or by winning a major title elsewhere. Others will not have made it quite to the top but will be attending that meeting for a last chance race where victory could see them starting at the back of the grid.
Today, however, is the other way to do it. Today is the one and only wildcard event and surprisingly our first glimpse of full size National Bangers at a PRI meeting this year. The winner gets a crack at the title without even having to qualify elsewhere; a useful way of making it into the main championship final if you have not been building up the points for whatever reason. You never quite know how this meeting will pan out since drivers will often go for this meeting from any other promotion so it will be interesting to see who will show up today, whether they are unknowns with something to prove or well known drivers with a string of victories behind them.
The Stock Rods also have their own business today as they take part in the annual Essex Championship, a meeting that most of our formulas will go through before we finally close for the winter. Unlike the Supreme, more of which follows next month, this is all decided around a single meeting with the cars drawn for their grid position in the first heat then raced in the reverse of that grid in the second heat to provide a points total that decides their final grid position in their last race when the trophy is then raced for. While you can watch the current favoured drivers, for example driver’s championship leader Dave Crouch or Supreme points leader Michael Seex, the way things go in an Essex Championship is unpredictable. It can all depend on the luck of the draw!
They had a break in our last meeting but the Ministox are back today to continue their quest for the driver’s title, preferably without crashing out. Our last meeting here featured some pretty spectacular antics from our younger drivers including an amazing roll by the pits for Abbie McGuiness (don’t worry folks; she was back out again at the Mildenhall meeting the very next weekend!) We shall see what they can do today.
Last but certainly not least, we have the 2l Stock Cars for another go after their Supreme Qualifier in our last meeting and we shall see if that there Bill King can keep winning stuff or, as in the final of that meeting, he can be denied by the likes of Alfie Jones.
We shall be a couple of weeks into August when next we meet as the National Micro Bangers line up for their series final with more from the Ministox and the return of the Lightning Rods for their Essex Championship. That all starts at 1pm on Sunday, August 13. See ya!
